All you need to know about the Canadian tuxedo

Total denim is one of the hottest trends of this season. Have all-denim looks always been in style? Of course, not. To be honest, the so-called Canadian tuxedo had to fight for its place under the fashion sun.

What does the Canadian tuxedo mean? How is denim related to a tuxedo? What’s Canadian about it? Keep scrolling to find out!

History of the total denim look and the name stuck to it – Canadian tuxedo – is closely tied to Bing Crosby, American singer and actor. In 1951, he wanted to check into a Vancouver hotel, but he was denied service because of the way he looked. He was wearing his favorite combination, a denim shirt and a pair of Levi’s jeans, and back then, denim was considered inappropriate for respectable places. If you wanted to visit places of such class, you were expected to wear a tuxedo.

Levi Strauss & Co. heard about the incident and came up with a creative solution: the company created a denim tuxedo jacket decorated with red detailing and copper rivets for Bing Crosby, so nobody could say he was not dressed for the fancy occasion. Inside the jacket, there was an inscription saying, “Notice to All Hotel Men: a perfectly appropriate fabric and anyone wearing it should be allowed entrance into the finest hotels.”

Starting from the 1960s, the Canadian tuxedo was little by little making its way into high fashion. The journey ended with a success! The total denim wes deemed stylish because celebrities actively sported it. Denim was no longer looked at as the working class’s clothing – wearing it now was a fashion statement. Moreover, the material became a staple of the 90s, when the hottest brand was Calvin Klein which produced controversial ads and campaigns everyone talked about.

In 2001, we witnessed arguably the most famous total denim looks on the red carpet when Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake appeared at the American Music Awards. Fashion-wise, the critics called the looks a total flop. But they made it into pop culture and fashion history!

Katy Perry and Riff Raff tried to repeat the famous outfits for the MTV Video Music Awards and thus secured denim as the style staple in the public’s minds.

Today celebrities can also be frequently seen wearing total denim looks. They vary from casual and boring to kooky and fancy!

There’s a lot of denim in the street style. You can create your own all-denim look using these Vikisews patterns: Cameron skirt, Madison moto-jacket, Jewel pants, Cynthia shirt.
