To sew this cardigan, choose knit fabrics with the following properties:
- soft, high-stretch with at least 70% stretch factor, medium-weight;
- the fabric content should include elastane or spandex and can include natural (wool, cotton), artificial (viscose), blends (wool + polyester, cotton + polyester, etc.), and synthetic fibers (polyester);
- the following fabrics are recommended: rib knits, Punto di Roma, sweater knit.
Attention! We recommend using only stretchy fabric for this cardigan. You may determine the fabric stretch factor by yourself. To do so, mark 10 cm (4") on the cross grain of the fabric, place it to the ruler, and then stretch it. Use the following formula to calculate the stretch factor: (amount fabric stretched / starting measurement ) x 100. So, if 10 cm (4") stretch to 17.5 cm (7"), the fabric stretched by 7.5 cm (3"). Therefore, according to the formula, the fabric has a 75% stretch factor [(7.5/10 x 100= 75%) or (3/4 x 100 = 75%)].
The garment in the photo is made in rib knit. This fabric is medium-weight, soft, and very stretchy. The fabric content is a blend of cotton (98%) and spandex (2%).

3. Matching thread, 5 spools (1 spool for the sewing machine and 4 spools for the overlocker).
- sewing machine for construction;
- overlocker for construction and for finishing raw edges. It may be replaced with a stretch overlock stitch or a zigzag stitch on the sewing machine (overlock or zigzag stitch width 2-3 mm, stitch length 2.5 mm);
- coverstitch or coverlock machine for finishing the garment and sleeve hems. This may be replaced with a double needle for the sewing machine if it has a zigzag stitch setting.
Important! When sewing knit fabrics, it’s recommended to use specialty needles for knits (such as stretch, super stretch, jersey, etc.). These needles have a rounded tip which allows the needle to pass in between the loops instead of piercing the threads.
