Flat-felled seam: how to finish edges on outerwear fabric and jeans

Resently, we shared how to sew a French seam as part of our Vikisews sewing hacks series. Here we will show you another way how you can give a more professional look to your garments — the flat-felled seam.

The flat-felled seam is great for outerwear and jeans. It can be narrow or wide.

1️. Place the pieces right sides together and stitch with a 1.5 cm (5/8”) seam allowance.

2️. Press the seam allowances open.

3️. Trim the back seam allowance down to 5 mm (just under 1/4”).

4️. Fold the larger (front) seam allowance by 5 mm (just under 1/4”). Then fold it over to the back, covering the back seam allowance.

5️. Stitch the front seam allowance to the back piece, at 1−2 mm from the folded edge.

6️. Press the seam.

This technique helps achieve a neat finish and can be a great alternative to an overlocker.
