New creative director of Gucci — what lies ahead?

Milan Fashion Week has come to an end on September 25, 2023, and we got to witness the highly anticipated Gucci show. Why was it so hyped up? This show was the first one curated by Sabato De Sarno, the new creative director of Gucci. He was supposed to bring fresh air to the brand and start a new era. But who is Sabato De Sarno? Find out in today’s digest – keep scrolling!

Sabato was born in Naples and graduated from two Italian schools of design, Istituto Carlo Secoli and Istituto Europeo di Design. He is not just a talented designer – he actually knows how to sew. Sewing skills are super valuable in the industry as many designers are mostly stylists who sketch and create mood boards.

De Sarno has had an impressive career in the fashion industry. He started out in Prada in 2005 where he was responsible for prints. Then he worked at Dolce&Gabbana, where he was in charge of the knit garments line. Before Gucci, he had been working at Valentino for 14 years. First, he also curated the knit collections, but later he became the fashion director of the men’s and women’s ready-to-wear lines as well as the right-hand man of Pierpaolo Piccioli, the creative director of Valentino.

Everybody wondered what would happen to Gucci after Alessandro Michele’s departure. We actually discussed this in one of our previous posts. And now we know for sure that the brand has started a new era: everything eccentric and over-the-top is in the past, as the new creative director has set course to safe designs and legendary items of the brand. The collection we saw reminded us of the Tom Ford era at Gucci.

It’s too early to say if De Sarno’s work will be as successful as Michele’s. The first collection has received mixed reviews. The critics say they haven’t yet noticed any cohesiveness, just a number of references and safe creative steps. But this makes us wonder what is coming next, don’t you think? Stay tuned with us! :)

However, we have every right to call Sabato De Sarno one of us – because he is our fellow sewist. Our community is precious, and growth, mutual assistance, and support are our main values. We are happy to have you on board!
