The princess was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, in the aristocratic Galitzine family, right before the fall of the Russian Empire. After the 1917 October Revolution, the family fled to Rome, Italy.
Irene never meant to become a fashion designer, but one day she had nothing to wear to a reception, which is why she made a dress that impressed everyone. She worked for the Italian designers Sorelle Fontana for some time and later decided to start her own brand. Irene had grand ambitions – she wanted to become a world-famous fashion designer on her own.
In 1946, Irene opened the Galitzine salon in Rome, but the big success came to her during the decade of revolution, the 1960s. Irene Galitizne’s ideas and vision were innovative and revolutionary to fit the time. That is when she came up with the idea of wearing pajamas in public.
PJs by Galitzine were made of lavish, fancy fabrics and embellished with luxurious embroidery. They became a hit in an instant. Diana Vreeland, the legendary fashion editor of Harper’s Bazaar, called the suit “pigiama palazzo”, which secured its iconic status.
Designs by Irene Galitzine were worn by the most famous women of her time: Sofia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Greta Garbo, and Jackie Kennedy.
